40 Bedroom Care Home for Knoll Care Partnership

Designed for a small, private operator in Urmston to consolidate two existing homes into a new purpose-built care home on a corner site in Urmston. The design was highly commended by Trafford Planning Authority during the process as “a well-integrated solution for this important corner location.”

The main features of the home are the fully glazed lounge and dining rooms which open out onto the attractive gardens, also designed by C Squared Architects. First-floor balconies wrapping around the glazed dining rooms add to the focal point overlooking the junction. Designed to allow the home to be spilt via a central core into four 10 bedroom households to provide separate accommodation for various levels of dementia, with shared accommodation on each floor such as assisted bathrooms to reduce cost and floor area.

The internal courtyard is hard landscaped for car parking giving easy access to both the main entrance and the separate service entrance to allow secure access to the service accommodation located in the roof space.

We were commissioned by Octopus Healthcare to produce a high end, 72 bedroom specialist dementia and nursing care home for a large, national operator. Located in a rural area of Cheshire, this scheme has been designed to look like a series of large houses joined together with glazed links and contrasting roofing materials. The design has developed through discussions with the Local Authority, Alzheimer’s Association and Dementia United and is based around an external courtyard idea from which the ground floor units open out onto, with balconies created for the upper floor residents to enjoy.

A first floor ‘dementia/village street’ will provide a hub of activity for residents and includes a cinema room, hair/beauty salon, therapy room, library and multipurpose activity room. The state of the art building will use a combination of traditional materials in a contemporary way with large expanses of glazing to provide well-lit rooms and timber and stone detailing to create a characterful development that suits the area.

Surrounded by Greenbelt and on the edge of the conservation area, the site has a number of constraints including topography, which has led to a split-level design to reduce the impact of the development.

67 Bedroom Care Home for Octopus Healthcare and designed for Care UK

The client for this Care Home is Octopus Healthcare, however, it was designed for Care UK to ensure that it met with their space and operational standards. The home is 3 storeys high and uses the slope of the site to provide gardens at the ground and first-floor level, with a large terrace providing outside space on the second floor.

The site was originally occupied by a modern car dealership, which influenced the contemporary proportions and materials during the planning process. The early discussions with the Local Authority tree officer allowed us to design around the preserved trees which dominated the site and view from the surrounding residential houses.
