We were commissioned by Octopus Healthcare to produce a high end, 72-bedroom specialist dementia and nursing care home for a large, national operator. Located in a rural area of Cheshire, this scheme has been designed to look like a series of large houses joined together with glazed links and contrasting roofing materials. The design has developed through discussions with the Local Authority, Alzheimer’s Association and Dementia United and is based around an external courtyard idea from which the ground floor units open out onto, with balconies created for the upper floor residents to enjoy.
A first floor ‘dementia/village street’ will provide a hub of activity for residents and includes a cinema room, hair/beauty salon, therapy room, library and multipurpose activity room. The state-of-the-art building will use a combination of traditional materials in a contemporary way with large expanses of glazing to provide well-lit rooms and timber and stone detailing to create a characterful development that suits the area.
Surrounded by Greenbelt and on the edge of the conservation area, the site has a number of constraints including topography, which has led to a split-level design to reduce the impact of the development.
